‘Phil is a longstanding and dedicated artist and illustrator with a genuine passion for the natural world and the mountain environment. He has made a considerable voluntary contribution to climbing and mountaineering guidebooks and in the period 1981-2004 has produced over 300 line drawings, maps and diagrams for nine British Mountaineering Council guidebooks covering the Peak District and Staffordshire. He has also contributed artwork to many other climbing guidebooks covering both England and Wales for the Climbers' Club, The Yorkshire Mountaineering Club, The Mynydd Climbing Club & The Royal Navy Mountaineering Club Lundy guidebook.
The BMC frequently uses Phil's prints as prizes and awards for volunteers. In 2010 we established the prestigious 'George Band Award for substantial voluntary contribution to mountaineering'; the six awards presented to date have all taken the form of a framed piece of mountaineering artwork produced by Phil’.

Dave Turnbull – Chief Executive, The British Mountaineering Council. September 2016.

'I spent the day with Phil Gibson, and of the modern era one of the most important guide book artists around. I had the most amazing time looking at almost 300 original guide book drawings that Phil has created over the last 30 years for guide books produced by The British Mountaineering Council, The Climbers' Club and a handful of private publishers. If you get excited about the hand drawn topos the originals which are produced often several times larger than the reproduced work simply take your breath away. The detail in them is mind blowing and Phil has an outstanding talent. Phil was a super host and was kind enough to sign some my guide book collection. It was an absolute pleasure Phil, many thanks'.

David Price – Cockerel Books. September 2016.

'Phil was contracted by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority in 2011 & 2012 to create illustrations of the 4 main landscape types in the National Park for the production of a Woodland Siting and Design Guide. Each landscape type has a distinct character, unique to the Dales, and is difficult to capture in a drawing, which Phil managed to achieve producing some beautiful artwork that can be used again by the National Park Authority. We have had some wonderful feedback from staff and users of the guide about the quality and clarity of the illustrations’.

Kate Wilding – Conservation Support Officer (Wildlife, Trees & Woodlands).
The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority. June 2013.

‘Philip exhibited his work in the Long Gallery at Oriel Ynys Môn in 2011 and his exhibition was well received by the public. He enjoys being outside, drawing and painting the natural world, capturing its atmosphere and severity’.

Nicola Gibson – Arts Officer, Oriel Ynys Mon, Anglesey, North Wales.

Dear Philip,
My wife and I are both climbers (I¹m guessing you may be too?) and both of these routes hold great memories for us. Hence we have been intending to buy prints of them from you for a while now. It¹s an incredible talent you
have and thank you for making that available to us all. The prints arrived today and are amazing !

David Boulton-Knight, Crowland. June 2018.

Dear Philip
I just had to write to say how thrilled I am with the portrait of 'Gordon' my Springer Spaniel. You have captured his expressions so well. I vowed I would never have another dog but this one is very special. Many thanks.

Jill Brandon, Stafford. December 2015.

I received The Black Cuillin Poster Print today from the BMC online shop and I'm delighted with it. I would now like to order a mounted colour print of your Ben Nevis North Face . Many thanks.

Alan Boyle, Cranage, Cheshire, October 2015.

Hi Philip,

I wanted to let you know how delighted Gary was with the mounted print I purchased from you - Tryfan In Winter. He took great delight in recalling the various routes we had climbed over the years (including getting caught in a gale !). Many thanks once again.

Lynn Bevan, West Midlands. March 2015.

Hi Phil,
Me and Helen have finally got around to putting pen to paper and all we would like to say is "words don't really do justice to the portrait that you have produced of our two Labradors: Meg and Bella".

Steve & Helen Wigmore, Sheffield, January 2015.

Hi Phil,
I wanted to let you know that the Ben Nevis North Face mounted print arrived safely this morning and looks great. It was indeed very carefully packaged. Many thanks for that and for your prompt service.
Kind regards.

Liz Toombs, Chester, October 2014.

Dear Phil,
Just a quick note to say thank you so much for sending out The Black Cuillin Fine Art print so quickly, and so well packaged. It is every bit as stunning as I had hoped, and I had great pleasure taking it down to my local frame maker this morning, selecting the best materials I could afford. I cannot wait to see it mounted on the wall. It will, for certain, act as a life long reminder of one the most beautiful but slightly sinister mountain ridges I have ever walked and climbed.

Nigel Porter, East Sussex, June 2014.

Dear Phil
‘I used to like your illustrations in the earlier guidebooks - aesthetic and exact. I've still got an out-of-print Stoney Middleton guide from my youth with a picture of me in it and your excellent crag diagrams. I'd like to order some prints from you, to help me reminisce….'

John Reti, Stockport, June 2013.

‘The Black Cuillin Fine Art Print has just been delivered. Absolutely stunning and brings back some happy memories. Many thanks.’

Colin Harding, Peterborough, July 2013.

Hi Phil,
‘I unpacked the 2 Black Cuillin Fine Art Prints today, and am very pleased with them, I think you've done an excellent job. I really like the Cuillin prints, this might sound odd but I'd like to order another one..!  Before you think I'm obsessed, basically I bought the other two as presents for two good friends but now I think I really want one for my own wall too..!  Especially having seen them in the flesh. Thanks again’.

Nick Gillet, The Climbers’ Club, July 2013.

‘When I saw The Black Cuillin Poster Print I was very impressed with the quality of the picture … I knew I would like it, but I have to admit that it was even better than I expected. Framed, it is going to look very impressive on my wall at home … although first I might have to rethink the layout of my pictures … a not unpleasant task’.

PS ‘When my friends ask where did I get the picture from, I will tell them’

Derek Tyers. Stockton on Tees. August 2013.

‘I recently saw your exhibition at Oriel Ynys Mon and was totally blown away by your Crag drawings. The detail was amazing and I kept returning to the pictures just to absorb the majestic grandeur depicted with your pen and ink. I can't imagine how long they must have taken to complete’.

Caro Wilson, Macclesfield, Spring 2011.

Dear Phil,

‘I was blown away by your paintings in The Electric Mountain Gallery at the Lanberis Mountain Film Festival, and will return to have another look at them this week. The pleasure of being involved in film festivals for me is in meeting talented and inspiring people like you’.
